As is well known, SSL certificates are typically issued to fully qualified domain names (FQDNs). However, some websites can only be accessed through IP addresses rather than domain names. So is it possible to use SSL certificates to secure IP addresses too? The answer is a capital YES. A trusted SSL certificate can be issued for a public IP address and enable HTTPS encryption.

IP SSL certificates come in two types: domain validation (DV) and organization validation (OV). Currently, NicSRS offers IP address certificates from brands such as sslTrus, Sectigo, PositiveSSL, GlobalSign, Digicert, and more. Since 2016, CA can no longer issue SSL certificates for internal IP addresses and internal server names according to the CA/B Forum policy. Therefore, IP SSL certificates can only be used to encrypt public IP addresses with HTTPS. Then, let's see how to apply for an IP SSL certificate.

Requirements for Applying for an IP SSL Certificate:

- The applicant must have administrative control over the IP address for which they are applying for an SSL certificate.
- The applicant can be an enterprise, organization or an individual.
- IP SSL certificates only support DV SSL certificates and OV SSL certificates.
- It is possible to apply for a single IP SSL certificate or multiple IP SSL certificates, but wildcard IP are not supported.

How to Apply for an IP SSL Certificate:

1. Start by choosing the IP SSL certificate you want to apply for in NicSRS. You can visit the “IP SSL certificate” page to learn more about the details of each certificate.
2. Click the "Buy Now" button for the respective product to proceed with the purchase.
3. Submit the required information for the IP SSL certificate application.
4. Verify the ownership of the IP address.
5. Download and install the certificate.

It is important to note that when applying for an IP SSL certificate, ownership of the IP address needs to be verified, and only file-based verification is available.

In summary, enterprises that rely on IP addresses for access instead of domain names can apply for an IP SSL certificate. The application process is similar to that of DV SSL certificates and OV SSL certificates. Once authenticated, an IP address can also achieve information encryption, reducing the risk of IP impersonation.
